Teaser It was a lot of fun to write stoned!Snape. As always, I felt compelled to do research. Originally I was going to make the potion a magical version of Quaaludes, but I found out that they didn't enjoy much of a vogue among British drug abusers. I also researched current thinking about panic attacks and how to medicate them, and how people abuse anti-anxiety medications.
What about this particular story makes it your favorite? I've only been writing fan fiction for a year, so I had to choose a favorite from all of my stories! I decided on this one because it was one of the ones that felt like it almost wrote itself. I laughed while I wrote it, and then afterward basked in the glow of the positive feedback.
What was the inspiration for this story? As with many of my stories, this one came as a plot bunny in an instant message chat with someone on my flist. I was actually suggesting that my friend write the story, but since I had almost a completed in my head, I thought I should give it a try.
My friend wanted something that showed Snape as someone who was very sexually repressed. Something had to break down the wall of that repression. I decided to write from Harry's perspective; one of the pleasures of reading Snarry stories for me is the moment that Harry realizes that Snape does not hate him.
I wanted Harry to be a relatively old virgin, and so I created a backstory to explain that as well. Mostly it doesn't appear in this story, but it was in my head. I find that works well. I did provide more of the backstory in the sequel, Morning After Blues.
Did you do something different in this fic that you had not tried before? I hadn't written a full-fledged Snarry story. The closest I had come was a short PWP in which Snape and Harry are both in magical disguise. I was new to the pairing and definitely new to the enthusiasm of habitual Snarry readers!
What was the writing process like for you? It was a lot of fun to write stoned!Snape. As always, I felt compelled to do research. Originally I was going to make the potion a magical version of Quaaludes, but I found out that they didn't enjoy much of a vogue among British drug abusers. I also researched current thinking about panic attacks and how to medicate them, how people abuse anti-anxiety medications, their side effects, and all of that.
I love doing research for fan fiction stories! I've learned so much.
Typically for my writing process, I went back to the story a few days after I posted it and tinkered with a few words here and there.
Do you have a favorite line, image, or scene from this story?
My favorite line is rather blue, which I suppose is not surprising! I don't think I can post it here where children might read it. Here is my second-favorite bit:
"You made the potion...to get high?"
Snape's laugh was full-throated. "Says the son of James 'Dr. J' Potter, the bloke who introduced cannabis to Hogwarts!"
"I never knew him though," Harry muttered, trying to get up. But Snape was still holding him tightly about the waist.
"Poor Potter, you've been trying to tell me that for the last fifteen years." Snape was still smiling, and it still looked very wrong on his face. Harry propped himself on one elbow. Snape was looking up at him with utter benevolence, and Harry flushed with pleasure. Had he really craved this awful man's good opinion? He felt something more satisfying than sex, finally seeing that approval from his old teacher.
What was the reader response like when you posted it?
Oh my gosh, it was overwhelming! I know a lot of people get many pages of feedback, but this was my first time getting this much feedback on a story. (I had heard from a lot of people for various non-fiction fandom essays.) The Snarry people were so generous with their praise. Several people asked for a sequel, and that had never happened to me before. My flist grew. I posted the story on Skyhawke and it got more hits than any of the others I have there. It was pretty wild.
Possibly my favorite thing was elanor_isolda commenting that she had read the entire story out loud to her roommate. I was so excited that the story had read correctly in an English accent!
Anything else you would like to share with the readers of your story. I had such a nice time with this story that I started trying to write more outside of my OTP and comfort zone.
