Inspired by the opening of the snarry_games art games, this week we're talking about brilliant fan art. Pen and ink drawings, watercolors, oil paintings, cartoons, comic strips, computer generated and computer enhanced pictures, photo manips, and icons, the HP fandom has an abundance of gorgeous fan art. Fanfic illustrations are awesome (we'll talk about them next week,) but I particularly enjoy HP artworks that tell a story of their very own.

(All linked art in the main entry is work-safe)

HP fan artists have done illustrations that far outweigh what JKR and the publishers chose for the books, like gredandfeorge's Mirror of Erised. Other pictures present canon scenes or quotations in a new light, like the_bitter_word's Dance School. (So cool, if you go here, you can watch her drawing/painting the picture!)

Some art perfectly blends fanon and canon, as in acid's Lessons Learned and companion piece A Lesson in Flying, and gnatkip's experiment in pointillism, Sunday Afternoon on the Grounds of Hogwarts School.

Other art works tell the stories that happened before the books, like mneomosyne's Little Snape at Spinner's End. In the cut tag, Mnem has little Snape saying, "Now, do pay attention, Mr. Bear," and the first comment by littleroo27 is " *this scene was shortly followed by Mr. Bear's first detention." Funny, and part of my internal canon now!

Title: Carpe Draconis
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fic of 2006
Pairing OR Main Character: H/D
Length: WIP Novel length (currently 13/25)
Rating: NC-17 for violence and language
Warnings: AU, No HBP Spoilers. Post Hogwarts, Second War Era. Draco-centric.

Very Brief Summary: Is it possible to capture a dragon when you suddenly find one within your reach? After his Fifth Year, Draco Malfoy makes a choice.

It's the second slash story that I've ever written and with this story I'm basically writing it the way I want the books to happen. I began writing this story two years ago when HBP wasn't close to being released and it has grown since then. The writing style I use for this fic is also very different to what I usually use and it's slow paced because I want to make the development of H/D as believable as I can make it.

Title: Courage on the Homefront
Responding to Theme: Favourite fics of 2006
Pairing: SS/HP
Length: 1000 words (10 drabbles x 100 words)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Very brief summary: When Harry goes off to fight the brave fight, Snape finds that it takes courage to be left behind too.

This is probably one of the most personal fics I have yet written, the subject matter not only being part of my day-to-day life but also very close to my heart.

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

Fitzgerald had a gift for writing gorgeous last lines, a task many writers find challenging. What does an author say just before she drops the curtain and ends the play? The last few lines are meant to round out a story, reveal a final twist, send the reader back into the real world with a happy smile or a broken heart. Bland and lifeless endings are so disappointing, but great last lines stay with you forever.

Readers and writers, how important are last lines? Do they affect your memory of the piece? What are some of your favorite last lines? (Post them here and we'll see who can guess the most!)

Writers, are first lines or last lines more difficult to write? What are your favorite last lines from your stories?

Think you're good at last lines? See if you can guess these...

Title: Better Than Revenge
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics (2006)
Pairing: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy
Length: novel length, WiP (c. 138,000 words as of this post)
Rating: adult (NC17)
Warnings: Some explicit sexual encounters in later chapters, including rimming. The characters are 17, so underage by some standards if not those of the Wizarding world.
Very Brief Summary: Immediately post-HBP, Harry's plans are disrupted when Draco seeks his help.

After quite a lot of wibbling because I don't quite like choosing a work in progress as my favorite, I gave in anyway because I like both how I've developed the two main characters, and what I've been able to do with minor characters. I've especially liked Hermione, the house-elves Dobby and Kreacher, and Mrs. Black's portrait. It's hard to pick out a favorite line in a work this long, but I'm quite fond of the bit at the end of chapter 9 when Draco says, "Harry, whatever happens between us, I don't think 'straight' is how we've ever played."

This is just a friendly reminder that hpwriterschoice's first theme (Favorite Fics 2006) will be closing on September 20.

I encourage those of you who haven't posted a discussion of your favorite fic to do so. I also encourage everyone to go and read the interesting discussions generated by author's contributions. The Master List of fics will be posted after September 20, but meanwhile you can find all the relevant fics here.

I look forward to reading the discussions and discovering new fics!

For those of you wondering, the answers (and links) to the first lines will be up on Wednesday when we post the next Weekly Discussion.

“I’ve watched through his eyes, I’ve listened through his ears, and I tell you he’s the one.”

Not a bad first line, eh?

How many writers have sat, pen poised above paper, waiting for the perfect opening sentence to strike them? As readers, first lines can draw us into a story, making us excited, angry, or just plain curious. They can be memorable or forgettable, interesting or banal.

Readers and writers, what do you think makes a good first line? What are some of your favorite first lines from fic? (Post ‘em and see who can guess the most!)

Writers, what are your favorite first lines? How did that line come to you?

Think you are good at first lines? See if you can guess these….Collapse )

He's one of Harry's roommates. He always seems to be there just when you need him most, sometimes in unorthodox ways (getting those last ten points at the end of Philosopher's Stone or heading to the Ministry with the Trio). At the same time, there are lots of unanswered questions about Neville (how old was he when his parents went to St. Mungo's? where was he when Bellatrix tortured his parents?).

How do we see Neville in fics? How are some of our Neville questions answered in fics? What other questions/answers would you like to see explored in fics?

Talk to us about your favorite Neville characterizations. What makes it work so well in the fic? How does he grow in ways that are undeveloped in canon? Are there some perfect Neville quotes that you can share with us?

Let's hear from all our readers and writers!

Title: New York Minute (http://ssf-moonshadow.com/archive/archive/0/newyork.html)
Responding to Theme: Favorite fics
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Length: Novella, complete
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Violence, terrorism, explicit sex.
Very Brief Summary: On September 11, 2001, Remus Lupin was in the World Trade Center. This is what happened next.

This is probably the toughest writing experience I've ever had, including my final paper at seminary. Not only was I melding the Wizarding World with modern terrorism, I was doing my best to honor the thousands who died in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania on that horrible day.

Title:That Which Is Constant
Responding to Theme: Favorite Story 2006
Pairings: H/G and R/Hr.
Length: One-shot – approx. 4,800 words
Rating: PG
Warnings: OBHWF (One Big Happy Weasley Family)
Very Brief Summary: Hermione attends Harry and Ginny’s wedding.
Since my favorite story is always my work-in-progress, I chose this one-shot, which introduces the themes, characters and post-Hogwarts universe I’m working with now.

Welcome new members and watchers. We're glad you've joined us!

There have been some fascinating posts so far; it has been so interesting to get glimpses into the process and stories behind favorite fics. I have some reading to catch up on, and I'm sure others do too. If you are new to the comm (or have just been short on time!) I encourage you to flip through the posts and take the opportunity to ask the authors some questions.

In the spirit of asking questions and engaging dialogue between readers and writers, hpwriterschoice is pleased to announce the advent of our Weekly Discussions. Each Wednesday Prue or myself will post a topic for discussion; the topics will focus on fanfic, both writing and reading it. We hope everyone will participate. Feel free to direct others here as well!

If you would like to suggest a topic for a future Weekly Discussion, feel free to leave a comment here.

See you all on Wednesday!

Title: Oubliette
Author: RaeWhit joanwilder
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics (2006)
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Rating: NC-17
Length: Novella/20,000 words
Warnings: Slash/explicit sexual situations/adult language

Summary: In a Floo mishap, Harry and Severus are trapped together in an oubliette on Christmas Eve. Written for the 2005 Slash Advent Calendar.

One of my favorite lines: With his hands he is pushing my thighs apart, and I let him, the focus of my world now, his mouth and seven, perhaps eight, inches of my anatomy. Optimistically, nine.

Why this is my favorite fic: The writing of this fic was memorable for me because it encompassed some of my most favorite elements: a Christmas theme, the exploration of magical theory, a break-up/make-up scenario, and then an element that turned it into the fic writing experience from hell

Title: Seven Sins, or, The Misadventures of the Bros. Weasley With One Harry Potter, Boy Who Lived
Theme: Favourite Fics 2006
Pairing: Harry/Fred/George/Ron/Bill/Charlie/Percy
Length: one-shot, 12,500 words
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Slash, wanking, twincest, briefly dubious consent, gangbang
Summary: Harry explores the Seven Deadly Sins, among others, with the six Weasley brothers in turn, and together.

When mary_re issued her Seven Deadly Sins challenge, I immediately had the idea to write 7 stories involving Harry and the various Weasley brothers. I asked for her permission to turn in my story late (though not too late late, as it turned out), and started making plans.

Title: If Only
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics (2006)
Pairing: Severus Snape/Harry Potter
Length: One-shot; 1203 words, so very short
Warnings: Character death, angst
Very Brief Summary: Once upon a time, Severus Snape fucked Harry Potter.

What about this particular story makes it your favorite?
What a difficult decision! This fic is my favourite for the very simple reason that it was written at a time of intense emotion and still captures that for me. It was written over a period of three hours while I was listening to election results coming in and I was feeling very bitter and despairing.

The fic itself is very abrupt and harsh in style, structure and language.Collapse )

Title: Tutelage
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics (2006)
Pairing: Lucius Malfoy/Severus Snape
Length: Nine-part novella, complete
Warnings: At the time I started writing this pairing, I was under the impression that Lucius and Severus were much closer in age than the Lexicon claims they are, though I have questions both about the Lexicon's math and Rowling's. I never stated exactly how old Severus was in "Tutelage" but since Lucius is seventeen, Severus is underage, though not meant to be as underage as the Lexicon would suggest.
Very Brief Summary: Lucius gives Severus an education in what it means to be a Slytherin.

I started this story intending for it to be a PWP, a one-shot for ldybastet, since the pairing is her favorite and since I hadn't attempted it since I'd stopped working on a story involving a nasty Lucius who made me wary of the character for quite awhile. Somewhere around the third chapter of "Tutelage" I realized that it was no longer a PWP, and somewhere around the eighth chapter I realized that it was probably the most interesting HP story I'd written. More.Collapse )

Title: Kamikaze
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics (2006)
Pairing: Main character - Ron. Pairing: gen, but if you squint, Ron/Hermione or Ron/Harry. If you really squint, Ron/Snape.
Length: ~1,900 words
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Off-screen character death
Very Brief Summary: Stopping a war in the middle isn't easy when one of the sides isn't as enthusiastic as the other.

This fic is very important to me, because it was sheer gut reaction to something extremely upsetting that I studied in history -- namely, how Japan, in WW2, turned to Russia for aid in peace negotiation with the US, yet instead of receiving it, accepted a war declaration. On the 8th of August 1945, Russia invaded to China {to mostly Japanese-occupied area}. On the 9th, the second nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagesaki; one of the reasons was to warn Communist Russia off China.

This was the first time I wrote something I didn't believe in, as well as the first time I wrote Ron. In the fic, I knew that Ron was wrong with what he did, yet I could explain perfectly {to myself and hopefully the readers as well} just why he did what he did. I disagree with what he did, but I can't blame him.

Title: Amnesia
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics 2006
Pairing: H/D
Length: Long one-shot, 11,000 words broken into 6 parts
Rating: Intended for an adult audience, no one under 17 please
Warnings: Homosexual sex. Some violent situations.
Very Brief Summary: Harry's mind went blank.

Most of what I have written is Harry/Draco, and as I discussed in a recent essay (Ten Questions About Draco Malfoy), there are infinite variations of Draco's character that can be projected from the canon. Harry, on the other hand, has a narrower range, because we know so much more about him and spend so much more time in his head in the books.

So I wrote this from Harry's point of view, but starting with a 'blank slate.'

Title: Catching The Snitch
Responding to Theme: Favorite Fics (2006)
Pairing: Harry/Severus
Length: multi-chaptered fic - 15,122 words (complete)
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Adult Language, Graphic Sexual Content
Summary: Written prior to release of HBP. Harry shows up unexpectedly at a Quidditch match at Hogwarts to meet his mystery fiancé. Set 4 yrs after Harry graduates Hogwarts.

What about this particular story makes it your favorite?

It took me a while to choose a favorite, the reason being that I like certain aspects of everything I write, but I can’t say that I’m in “love” with a certain one above all else. In the end, I picked this one because it was one of my first, and as I re-read through it, it reminded me just why I love to read Harry/Severus stories.
